Game Recap: Softball |

BULLDOGS’ NSIC TOURNAMENT RUN ENDS WITH LOSSES TO NO. 1 SEED AUGUSTANA AND WINONA STATE

The University of Minnesota Duluth softball team would end its run in the NSIC Tournament today, losing a heartbreaker to No. 1 Augustana, 5-3 before a 1-0 loss in eight innings to Winona State in today's second game to remove them from contention.

Game 1:
In its first game, UMD would trail by one in the first inning, then lead the defending national champions until the 6th inning, when a four-run blitz by the Vikings would give the Bulldogs their first loss of the tournament.

UMD would respond to Augustana's first inning solo homerun in the second inning, when Lauren Oberle would get her second hit of the game, this one an RBI double that sent Sidney Zavoral past home to tie the game at one run apiece.

Jordyn Thomas would put the Bulldogs ahead 2-1 with a solo homerun in the third inning; Thomas leads the Bulldogs in homeruns this season with eleven. Jessica Bren hit a solo homerun -- her eighth homerun of the season --  in the fifth inning to extend the Bulldogs' lead to 3-1.

Unfortunately, despite the Bulldogs' best efforts, the team was unable to hold onto the lead, and the Vikings would score four runs in the bottom of the sixth for a final score of 5-3. Sam Pederson would start in the circle, with Lauren Dixon coming in as a relief pitcher midway through the sixth inning.

Lauren Oberle would lead the Bulldogs in hits with four in today's first game. Jessica Bren, Jordyn Thomas, Julia Gronholz, Kat Burkhardt, and Taylor Koehnen would all add hits for the Bulldogs as well.

Game 2:
Like in today's first game, it would be the opposition who would score first -- in this case, Winona would score in the third inning to make it 1-0, a score which would hold through the bottom of the seventh inning, when Lauren Oberle would hit a solo homerun to tie the game up at 1-1.

Winona State would add a run in the eighth inning to win the game.

Lauren Oberle would again lead the Bulldogs in hits, getting two in today's second game. Sidney Zavoral, Taylor Koehnen, and Emma Frost would each get a hit as well. Lauren Dixon would pitch a complete game for UMD, facing 32 batters, striking out four and allowing only two walks.

With the two losses today, the Bulldogs are eliminated from the NSIC Tournament. UMD ends its season with an overall record of 32-15.
