In a 51-7 landslide win over Minot State, the Minnesota Duluth closed out their last home game and senior night on a high note. Through the season, UMD went 5-0 at home. With their win against the Beavers, they now have a record of 6-3 overall and 4-1 in the division.
"It's good to send our seniors out with a win," said head coach
Curt Wiese. "Those guys deserved a hard fought, well executed football game. We look forward to a big game for us next weekend on the road."
The Bulldogs started the game off strong in the first quarter. On UMD's first drive they were in sight of the end zone but took a penalty that put them back five yards. In hopes to still score while in the red-zone, the Bulldogs attempted a field goal but the try was blocked by the Beavers. The UMD defense kept Minot's possession to a four play drive and forced them to punt. As they were placed on the Beavers' 37 yard line and were looking for redemption from their last drive, UMD got to work.
Wade Sullivan made a 17 yard rush to put UMD at the 13 yard line. On the third play
Kyle Walljasper made a rush to the left and slid into the end zone. The Bulldogs were successful on a two-point conversion from
Zach Ojile and were on the board 8-0. With the ball back in the Beaver's possession, UMD was putting pressure on them. On the third play
Landon Carter made an interception and returned it for 20 yards and placed UMD at the MSU's five yard line. The Bulldogs kept the momentum going into the next drive. In only three plays,
Zach Ojile rushed three yards up the middle for another touchdown. With a good kick from Curits Cox, UMD was up 15-0 at the end of the first quarter.
In the second quarter the Bulldogs kept their foot on the gas. UMD started their drive at their 39 yard line.
Cooper Yeary made a crucial 27 yard rush for a first down and placed them at the UMD40. After a couple more rushes by the Bulldogs,
Kyle Walljasper made a pass to
Zach Ojile at the four yard line. As Ojile was wide open on his reception he danced into the end zone for his second touchdown of the game. Ojile topped it off with a successful two-point conversion and gave UMD a 23 point lead. Late in the second quarter, UMD made a 91 yard drive in 10 plays. During the drive Walljasper made seven pass completions, including 21 yards to Sullivan and 20 yards to Weigand. After working their way across the field, the Bulldogs were at the Beaver's two yards line.
Armani Carmickle rushed a short two yards for the Bulldogs fourth touchdown and was followed by another good kick from Cox. At the end of the half, UMD had a 30 point lead on Minot and held them scoreless.
Minnesota Duluth kept the momentum rolling into the second half and wasted no time extending their lead further. As UMD was on the receiving end of the kickoff, there was a touchback that put them at the UMD25. On the Bulldogs first play, Walljasper made a deep pass to Carmickle at the MSU45. With nobody in Carmickle's way, he made his way into the end zone. His touchdown was a total of 75 yards, just 11 seconds into the second half. With Minot being down 37 points they were itching to get on the board. During the Beaver's second drive, they fought past the defense for 55 yards and got themselves on the board with a deep 21 yard pass. At the end of the third quarter, UMD had the lead 37-7.
With a 30 point lead going at the start of the fourth quarter, the Bulldogs weren't done there. UMD started the quarter off with possession and put
Nate Elmes in as quarterback. Elmes made a deep 39 yard pass to
DaShaun Ames for a first down at the MSU35. UMD made five rushes down to put them at the MSU11.
Cameron Miller made a rush to the right for 11 yards and a touchdown. Cox notched his fourth good PAT to extend the lead 44-7. Minot's drive following UMD's touchdown, the Beaver's could only get in four plays and lost 15 yards on the drive. Off the punt UMD was placed at the UMD46. Their first attempt was a rush that resulted in a loss of one yard. UMD's second play was a deep right pass from
Logan Graetz to
Noah Skifton for 55 yards and the Bulldogs seventh touchdown of the game. Cox continued his streak of good kicks and gave UMD the extra point. With 7:13 left in the game, the UMD defense kept Minot's drive to just four plays and 54 seconds. The Bulldogs killed off the remaining time on the clock and ended the game with a 44 point margin.
On the offensive side of the game, UMD dominated the Beavers. The Bulldogs recorded 29 first downs and notched 594 total offensive yards. The offense went the whole game without having to punt the ball. UMD was 6-12 on third down conversions and 2-4 on fourth down conversion. As Miller led the Bulldogs with 117 rushing yards, he also recorded his first career game of over 100 yards. Carmickle also marked a major milestone during the game. On his second reception, he recorded his 2000th career receiving yard. He is now one of six Bulldogs in program history with 2000 yards. On the game Carmickle made two receptions for 77 yards.
Defensively, UMD put the pressure on Minot. The Beavers were held to only five first downs and only 100 total offensive yards. Minot finished the game with a loss of 22 for total rushing yards. The Bulldog defense held Minot to a 2-13 third down conversion rate. UMD was lead in tackles by
Zach Wallace with seven. The defense recorded five sacks for a loss of 37 yards. Notching the solo interception was Carter with a return of 20 yards.
Up Next Minnesota Duluth will take the road next weekend Nov. 5 for a 1 p.m. kick off against Augustana.
