UMD FOOTBALL WINS 28-7 OVER THE WOLVES IN LAST REGULAR SEASON GAME

The Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs came out victorious in their last regular season game against the Northern State Wolves. The Bulldogs concluded the game 28-7, with a near shut-out win. UMD finished the 2022 regular season with a record of 8-3 overall and 5-1 in the North Division.

"We had a lot of fun with this senior class," said head coach Curt Wiese. "They have left behind an expectation both on and off the field after their last regular season win. They were always about the team and it showed today."

In true Bulldog fashion they started the game off quick. UMD was on the receiving end of the kick off and returned it for 36 yards. During the drive Wade Sullivan made two back-to-back rushes for 33 and 15 yards to place UMD two and goal. Kyle Walljasper made a rush up the middle for the two yards and a touchdown. With the extra point from Curtis Cox, the Bulldogs were on the board 7-0. On Northern's drive they worked to move the ball 49 yards in 13 plays. The UMD defense kept them just short of the end zone on their fourth down, forcing them to attempt a field goal, but it was kicked wide. The Bulldogs ended the quarter with a seven point lead while keeping NSU scoreless.

In the second quarter, the Wolves were looking to get on the board and tie the game. NSU was looking to make a third-down conversion at the NSU 44 and attempted a long 44 yard pass to the right but it was picked off by Dayvia Gbor. During UMD's drive Northern took two penalties that moved UMD 30 yards. With help from the penalties, the Bulldogs found their way to red-zone and were placed at the 17 yard line. Running back Sullivan made a deep 17 yard touchdown pass to Sam Pitz. Cox recorded another point for the Bulldogs putting them ahead 14-0 at the end of the half.

Going into the second half the Wolves received the kick-off and returned it to the NSU 31. NSU was looking for another first down and attempted another deep 44 yards pass to the right. On the pass Dayvia Gbor made his second interception of the game. The Bulldogs fought to keep Northern out of the end-zone and hold them scoreless through the third quarter. UMD was also scoreless in the quarter but held the lead 14-0.

Going into the fourth quarter, UMD was second and third at the three yard line. Walljasper made a rush to the left into the corner for his second touchdown of the game. Cox made his third extra point attempt to give the Bulldogs a 21 point lead. Later in the quarter UMD was forced to punt, but the receiver fumbled the ball, allowing for Andrew Klopp to recover the ball. During UMD's next drive there was another penalty on NSU that moved UMD 15 yards. Sullivan made a crucial 20 yard rush for a first down at the 16 yard line. As the Bulldogs closed the gap to the goal, Sullivan made a nine yard rush into the end zone for his second of the game and a 28-0 lead. As the game was nearing an end, and a shut-out was in sight for the Bulldogs, the Wolves scored with just 57 seconds left.

On the offensive side of the ball, UMD controlled the game. They ended the game with a total of 321 offensive yards and 19 first downs. The Bulldogs held possession for 31 minutes and scored 14 points off the turnovers. Sullivan totaled 101 yards in rushing and 181 total purpose yards. Walljasper completed 122 yards in passing with his longest at 41 and totaled 75 rushing yards.

The Bulldogs' defense proved to be a challenge for the Wolves. UMD kept them scoreless till the last minute. While making 49 total tackles, the defense held NSU to 258 total yards and only 15 first downs. The defense only allowed Northern to enter the red-zone once and kept them to 0-1 while in it. Gbor had a stellar game with two interceptions and 3 pass break-ups. Klopp had the solo fumble recovery for UMD, along with Michael Empting with the only sack on the game.
