The No. 7/8 University of Minnesota Duluth women's hockey team had to settle for a 1-1 tie Saturday afternoon at AMSOIL Arena against St. Thomas University on its second-ever Sophie's Squad, Hockey Hits Back mental health awareness game.
Â
The Bulldogs – who had no trouble scoring in bunches Friday in a 8-1 triumph, struggled to get their offense going Saturday despite outshooting the Tommies 49-15 in the game. The one goal output is only the second time this season UMD has been held to under two goals – UMD came into the game averaging 3.40 goals a game.

"Tough start, didn't really get going until the third, though we had some moments in the second, but it's not good enough, said UMD head coach Maura Crowell after the game. "Not good enough, and you know, it's a bit of a mental game when you win big on Friday night and turn around, and we probably expected it to be similar and it wasn't. Got to credit St. Thomas, they came out hard. They gave us a ton of trouble in their defensive zone and our ozone, just, you know, sniffing out some of the plays that we like to make. And credit their goalie, (Sakia) Maurer is a legit, you know, goalie, she's an Olympian, and I think she played fantastic."
UMD's lone goal of the game came at 3:18 of the second period. Graduate senior Taylor Anderson walked the puck from the top of the circle to the top of the slot, and Mannon McMahon tipped in Anderson's wrist shot for her eighth goal of the game. The goal extended Anderson and McMahon's current scoring streaks to three games each – Anderson has two goals and an assist for three points, while McMahon has two goals and four assists over those same three outings. Ashton Bell, who had the second assist on the goal, pushed her weekend point total to five – two goals and three assists against St. Thomas.
The Tommies answered on the power play at 14:31 of the third period on a goal from Haley Maxwell, but despite outshooting UST 19-5 in the third frame and 6-2 in overtime, UMD had to settle for its first tie of the season.
UST won the Western Collegiate Hockey Association extra point shootout 3-2 in four rounds. Naomi Rogge and Maggie Flaherty scored UMD's two goals.
Hailey MacLeod made her second-ever start in goal for the Bulldogs, making 14 saves in the game. Saskia Maurer, who like MacLeod did not start Friday night, had 48 stops for the Tommies, who were 1-of-3 on the power play. The Tommies are now 3-14-1 overall and 0-13-1 in WCHA play.
