UMD FOOTBALL FALLS SHORT TO MINNESOTA STATE

The Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs fall short on the road against the Minnesota State Mavericks. The Bulldogs dropped the game 10-17. The loss gives UMD an overall record of 1-1.

"Defensively we played well enough to win the football game," said head coach Curt Wiese. "Offensively we struggled moving the chains when we needed to. We knew going into the game we couldn't give up big plays and unfortunately we did."

The Mavericks started the game off fast in their favor. They put up a challenge for the Bulldogs as they ran a 85 yard punt return for a touchdown. The Bulldogs got the possession back and made a drive for eight plays. They moved the ball to the 19 yard line where they kicked a field goal and put some points on the board. The defense kept the Maverick's drives short in the first. The Bulldogs continued to fight but MSU got through again for another touchdown late in the first, putting the score at 3-14.

The Bulldogs fought in the second to keep the Mavericks out of the endzone but MSU kicked a good field goal to expand their lead to 14 points. The offense continued to try to bypass the Maverick defense on a seven play drive but couldn't break through. The half ended 3-17.

The third quarter was more promising for the Bulldogs. In the first possession of the quarter, UMD battled for 10 plays to gain 46 yards. On the last play the Bulldogs were set at the one yard line where Kyle Walljasper rushed to gain the Bulldogs first touchdown. Defensively the 'Dogs held them from putting up any more points, and finished the third 10-17.

Both teams were held scoreless in the fourth. On defense, UMD continued to hold MSU and forced them to punt on three of their drives. The Bulldogs made four drives in the last quarter but could not get the ball in the endzone to tie it up, ultimately falling short 10-17.

On the defensive side of the game the Bulldogs lead in tackles 55-49. Brad Dati and Marcus Glodowski lead the team with nine tackles each. Six of the tackles were for loss yards, putting the Mavericks back 35 yards. Linebacker Mac Strand had one of three sacks for a loss of 10 yards. With the three sacks they forced MSU back 26 yards.

Though the Bulldogs did not come out victorious, they did lead in total offensive yards, 229-202. Quarterback Kyle Walljasper saw action for the first time as a Bulldog and scored his first touchdown. Wallsjasper rushed for a total of 87 yards.
