On Sunday, for the second time in nine days, the No. 6 University of Minnesota Duluth women's hockey team downed the nation's second ranked team.
Â
This time the Bulldogs had the No. 2 University of Wisconsin in their crosshairs, knocking off the Badgers 3-2 at LaBahn Arena in Madison, Wis.
Â
"Just two really good teams going at it, tremendous opportunities on both sides and great goaltending again for us," said UMD head coach Maura Crowell, whose squad is 4-2-0 in their last six games at LaBahn Arena. "Today we were able to find the back of the net and that was so fun for our players. They really earned it, you know, that was a tough one for them yesterday, and to bounce back the way we did today on the road against the number two team in the country, it's a real statement win for us."
Â
The Bulldogs did indeed get outstanding netminding again between the pipes, this time from reigning Western Collegiate Hockey Association Goaltender of the Month and Week, Hailey MacLeod, who had 42 saves, including 10 in the first six minutes of the game UMD was on its penalty kill.
Â
After the first 10 minutes between the Bulldogs and Badgers was marred with power plays and penalty kills, the two sides skated to a 0-0 tie in the first period, similar to Saturday's outing.
Â
But unlike Saturday, despite a Wisconsin effort to put 20 pucks on MacLeod in the second frame, the Bulldogs held, and that scoreless tie stretched into the final period of play.
Â
Senior forward Clara Van Wieren shattered that scoreless tie a mere 1:15 into the third period after she skated into the slot and dropped the puck back for Gabby Krause. Van Wieren one-timed Krause's rebound for her eighth goal of the season to give UMD its first lead of the weekend.
Â
The Bulldogs tacked on another tally at the 5:13 mark courtesy of Mannon McMahon who tracked down a rebound off the stick of Reece Hunt to make it a 2-0 UMD advantage. The Badgers finally snuck one past MacLeod at 7:33 to draw within one, but the Bulldogs again struck for their third goal of the afternoon.
Â
That goal came from Jenna Lawry, who stuffed the puck through after it came off a Danielle Burgen shot from the extended goal line. Lawry's goal – her third of the season – would also serve as the eventual game-winner for the junior forward, the first of her career.
 Â
UMD's defense did the rest, outlasting a late Badger power play in the final three minutes that Wisconsin turned into a 6-on-4. The Badgers did finally put one past MacLeod with 3.7 seconds left in the period, but it was no matter for the Bulldogs, who have taken four of their last six games against Wisconsin in Madison.
Â
With the win – her second over a No. 2 side in nine days – MacLeod stays unbeaten on the season with a 6-0-1 record. In fact, MacLeod is unbeaten over her Bulldog career, a record that is now 11-0-2 in two seasons. MacLeod's 42 saves were also a career-high for the goaltender, who is 2-0-1 against top-2 teams in the past week and a half.
Â
The Badgers (13-3-0, 9-3-0) had 23 saves from goaltender Ava McNaughton. UMD's penalty kill unit, currently ranked fifth in the country with a 90.0 success rate, kept Wisconsin scoreless on its power play in the game (0-of-6) and over the weekend (0-of-8).
Â
UMD (10-5-1, 7-5-0) will close out its grueling eight-game stretch against top-10 teams next weekend when it heads to St. Cloud, Minn. to face No. 10 St. Cloud State University. The Friday-Saturday series will drop the puck on Friday at 6:00 p.m.
