After watching her current players rewrite the record books this past month, University of Minnesota Duluth head women's hockey coach Maura Crowell made a little history of her own.
Â
Crowell earned her 150th career win behind the bench of the eighth-ranked Bulldogs Saturday in a 5-1 triumph for UMD over Bemidji State University at the Sanford Center in Bemidji, Minn. The win pushes the Bulldogs current unbeaten streak to six games and nabs UMD its 23rd win of the season with an overall record of 23-8-3 and 17-8-3 in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association.
Â
"I talked to the team about eight years ago, when we used to come to Bemidji, and how hard this road trip was," said coach Crowell, when asked about her 150th win. "It was for many years up until last year, and you know, just the evolution of the team over my time here and what we've been doing the past few years, and how special it is. I love the group that we have, and everything that they give to us and to this program. There wasn't one of those wins I didn't like, but now it's on to the next one."
Â
The Beavers didn't go down without a fight, however, and stung the Bulldogs early, breaking UMD's two-game shutout streak with a goal by Reece Hunt just 37 seconds into the period. But the Bulldogs drew even at the 12:05 mark when Mannon McMahon buried one of her five opening frame shots on goal. McMahon popped in a puck thrown on net by Nina Jobst-Smith from the low boards to pull UMD level at 1-1.
Â
Just as they did Friday, the Bulldogs exploded offensively in the second period, and piled on three goals over a 10 minute span to overwhelm the Beavers. It started on a brilliant goal by Taylor Anderson at 5:58, a short side snipe past a goaltender screen from Gabbie Hughes for the eventual game-winner. Next came a wide open Hughes on the doorstep, who one-timed a clinical set up from Ashton Bell to make it a 3-1 lead at 10:04, and just before Anderson was at it again. Anderson, herself open in the low slot, banged in a pass from Hughes from the boards and after 15:56 elapsed in the second period, UMD had a 4-1 lead.
Â
The Bulldogs added one last goal at 16:48 of the third period on freshman defenseman Tova Henderson's first collegiate goal from just inside the left circle. Henderson's dart beat BSU netminder Abbie Thompson glove-side and expanded the Bulldogs stronghold on the scoreboard to 5-1.
Â
Freshman Haiely MacLeod had 14 saves in her sixth start of the season and fifth win, while her counterpart in the BSU net, Henderson, had 23. The Bulldogs, who netted three power play goals Friday were never awarded a power play Saturday, but held the Beavers scoreless in two attempts and empty-handed in six attempts in the series overall. UMD outshot BSU 28-15 overall in the game and 63-27 on the weekend.
Â
The Bulldogs will head back to AMSOIL Arena next weekend to host the No. 12 St. Cloud State University in the best-of-three WCHA first round of the playoffs. Friday's game gets underway at 3:00 p.m. while Saturday's skate is scheduled, barring any delays from high school games played prior, to drop the puck at 5:00 p.m.
