SODERBERG AND BELL SELECTED TO 2022-23 ALL USCHO TEAMS

University of Minnesota Duluth women's hockey goaltender Emma Soderberg and defenseman Ashton Bell were selected to 2022-23 All-USCHO teams, announced Thursday by USCHO. Soderberg was named to the 2022-23 All-USCHO First Team, while Bell was named to the 2022-23 All-USCHO Second Team.

The graduate student goaltender had a season for the Bulldog record books, setting both a UMD career record for shutouts (23) and a single-season record (12). Named the Western Collegiate Hockey Association's Goaltender of the Year, a WCHA Finalist for Player of the Year and a top-3 finalist for National Goalie of the Year, Soderberg was a also named the WCHA's Student-Athlete of the Year and was a All-WCHA First Team selection. A HCA Goaltender of the Month, as well as twice a WCHA Goaltender of the Month, Soderberg was named the league's goaltender of the month four times this season. The Jarved, Sweden product ended her career with the fifth-most NCAA career wins in history (five), and her 12 shutouts in the season was the 11th most by a goaltender in the NCAA in a year.  Soderberg posted 20 wins, marking just the ninth time a UMD netminder had recorded 20 or wins, and moved her into a four-way tie for the sixth most wins in a season. Last season Soderberg set the NCAA Tournament record for saves (146), and ended her career perfect  in NCAA Tournament opening games with a 3-0, 0.00 GAA after allowing not a single goal in those games. In fact, in five career NCAA Regional/Quarterfinal games, Soderberg allowed just four goals. Soderberg ended the season with a 1.39 goals against average -- the third lowest in program history.

Bell was named a 2022-23 CCM/AHCA Women's Division I All-American last month, her second time earning an All-American nod after previously earning Second Team accolades in 2020-21. The fifth-year defenseman was second in scoring for the Bulldogs this season, compiling a career-best 12 goals in addition to 21 assists for a career-high 33 points over 39 games, and was named a finalist for the WCHA Defender of the Year after earning 2022-23 All-WCHA First Team selections last month. With six power play goals, the Deloraine, Manitoba product was second among league defensemen, fourth among all skaters and ranked 10th in the NCAA. Eight times during the  season Bell had posted multiple-point games, which included one hat trick. Part of a backline that had allowed a league-low 47 goals against it, Bell was a two-time WCHA Defender of the Month, and a three-time WCHA Defender of the Week over the season.

Soderberg and Bell were a big part of why the Bulldogs allowed a NCAA's second-lowest GAA all season -- 1.36. UMD finished the season 26-10-3 in the NCAA Regional Final -- the program's third-consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance.
