The University of Minnesota Duluth women's hockey program will enter the 25th season of its existence in the hands of extremely experienced leadership.
The Bulldogs will be captained in 2023-24 by fifth-year senior to be
Mannon McMahon, while seniors to be
Nina Jobst-Smith and
Clara Van Wieren will serve as alternate captains.
"This leadership group will continue to uphold the high standards that exist in our program," said UMD head coach
Maura Crowell about her new captains. "Through connection and accountability, each of these young women will lead our team proudly for the 2023-24 season."
McMahon set a career mark offensively last season, posting 10 goals and 19 assists for 29 points. A three-time Western Collegiate Hockey Association Scholar Athlete honoree, the Maple Grove, Minn. native is also a three-time WCHA All-Academic Team member and a 2020-21 American Hockey Coaches Association 2020-21 Division I Krampade All-American Scholar.
Jobst-Smith was selected UMD's Breakthrough Player of the Year by the coaching staff, presented annually to the student-athlete one week ago, and like McMahon, had the most offensive season of her collegiate career ringing up five goals and 21 assists for 26 points, including two power play tallies and one game-winning goal. The North Vancouver, B.C. product was a WCHA Defensive Player of the Week on Jan. 2 and Jan. 9, and was the WCHA's Defender of the Month for January. Jobst-Smith is a two-time WCHA Scholar Athlete, as well as a two-time WCHA All-Academic Team member, and is a two-time American Hockey Coaches Association Division I Krampade All-American Scholar.
Van Wieren is also a two-time WCHA Scholar Athlete and WCHA All-Academic Team member, as well as a two-time American Hockey Coaches Association Division I Krampade All-American Scholar. The product of Okemos, Mich. compiled 22 points on nine goals and 13 assists in 2022-23.
UMD's 2023-24 season will get underway on Oct. 6 at AMSOIL Arena against Long Island University.
