For a second straight game, the No. 7 University of Minnesota Duluth women's hockey team pushed one of the nation's top teams to the edge, but unfortunately for the Bulldogs, for a second straight game, the end result didn't go their way.
The No. 2 University of Wisconsin snuck past UMD 2-1 Friday afternoon at AMSOIL Arena to retake their lead in head-to-head games this season (2-1), though UMD still has the edge over the past two seasons (4-3).
"I think we had the opportunities, I thought it was a great hockey game other than the end," said UMD head coach Maura Crowell. "Like we keep saying, we are right there. That's a good hockey team. I think we're right with them and just need to tighten up some of those spots."
After a scoreless and even first period, both teams broke through on the scoreboard in the second. Wisconsin's Casey O'Brien struck first 3:31 into the frame, but sophomore Danielle Burgen answered with a outside drive to the net on her own. Burgen beat Badger goaltender Jane Gervais blocker side for the equalizer at 7:46.
Tied after two periods of play, Wisconsin benefited from a power play it had carried over into the third period and struck with the extra skater on a goal from Lacey Eden just one minute into the frame in what would be the eventual game-winner.
The Bulldogs had outstanding goaltending from sophomore Hailey MacLeod, who made 32 saves and has now made 54 stops against the Badgers in two games this season. Wisconsin, who outshot UMD 34-21 overall, had 20 saves courtesy of Gervais and improved to 21-4-0 overall and 15-4-0 in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association.
UMD (13-10-2, 10-9-0) will skate for the series split tomorrow afternoon at AMSOIL. Puck drop is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
