Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

No. 5 Bulldogs Sweep St. Thomas Behind 2-0 Shutout

The No. 5 University of Minnesota Duluth women's hockey team earned its second Western Collegiate Hockey Association series sweep Saturday afternoon at AMSOILArena in Duluth, Minn. against the University of St. Thomas with a 2-0 shutout win.

The Bulldogs, who kept the Tommies scoreless in the series, improve to 5-3 overall and 4-2 conference play and head into a bye week on a two-game winning streak.

"They are a really good team defensively, really well structured defensively and we really had to work hard to get those two goals that we got today," said UMD head coach Laura Schuler, who is now 2-0 in her home rink. "The nice thing that I thought from yesterday to today was we were able to put the puck away 5-on-5 which was a goal for us going into today's game, so I'm really happy with that."

UMD's opening goal came from junior Danielle Burgen's first tally of the season at 13:46 of the first period. Burgen skated into the slot and banged home an errant rebound off a Tova Henderson shot for the 1-0 lead.

That one goal advantaged was enough for the Bulldogs until almost midway through the third period when freshman forward Zoey Krock, from the boards, fed Devyn Millwater at the top of the circle. Millwater's one-time wrist shot beat UST goaltender Dani Strom at 9:22 to double the UMD lead to 2-0 – more than enough for the defense UMD executed down the stretch.

Senior goaltender Tindra Holm earned both her first win as a Bulldog and first shutout with 19 saves in her AMSOIL debut. UMD outshot the Tomies 32-19 and neither team scored on its power play, with the Bulldogs going 0-of-2 and UST 0-of-1. Strom finished with 32 saves for the Tommies, who fall to 4-2 overall and 2-2 in the WCHA.

It will be 13 days from now before UMD faces an outside opponent again. The Bulldogs will travel to Mankato, Minn. to face Minnesota State University, Mankato on Nov. 1-2 for a series that will get underway that Friday at 6:00 p.m.

BULLDOG NOTES: Junior defenseman Devyn Millwater's first goal of her UMD career came from the first career assist and point of Zoey Krock … UMD remains unbeaten all-time against UST in 14 games with a record of 13-0-1 after the sweep … it's the sixth time the Bulldogs have swept the Tommies and sixth time UMD has shut out UST … it also marks the second series the Tommies have been unable to record a goal against the Bulldogs in.
