After an impressive three-game winning streak against top-10 opponents to start the season, the No. ¾ University of Minnesota Duluth women's hockey team finally suffered a 3-2 setback Saturday to No. 7 Colgate University inside The Class of 1965 Arena in Hamilton, N.Y.
The loss brings the Bulldogs overall record to 3-1 on the season, and goes down as the program's first loss to the Raiders – UMD is now 5-1-1 against Colgate.
The Bulldogs got on the board first, however, behind UMD graduate forward Clara Van Wieren's second tally in as many games. Van Wieren shoveled the puck low and to the right of Hannah Murphy one-time off a feed from senior forward Olivia Wallin, and a second assist credited to senior blueliner Hanna Baskin gave the Bulldogs an early 1-0 lead at 9:13 of the first period,
Colgate equalized on the power play at 13:10 on a goal credited to Kaia Malachin that deflected off Eve Gascon's back and pulled the Raiders even.
A second power play goal by Colgate at 18:02 of the second period gave the Raiders the same lead it had Friday night heading into the third period of play. UMD had outshot Colgate 24-7 in the opening frame, but the Raiders had bested the Bulldogs in the second period with a 14-6 shots on goal advantage, helped by two power plays in the stanza.
It put the UMD into a familiar spot over this young season – the Bulldogs found themselves trailing by a goal after the first 40 minutes of play for a third-straight game. But for the first time in three games, UMD couldn't mount a complete comeback. Wallin made it a one-goal contest 5:55 into the period on a power play snipe tally, but the Bulldogs would come no closer, forced to leave Hamilton with the series split.
Gascon made 33 saves for UMD, but the Raiders were lethal on their power play, successful in two-of-four attempts and five-of-nine on the weekend. The Bulldogs again outshot Colgate 44-36, but Murphy made 34 saves for the Raiders, who improved to 2-2 on the season.
UMD (3-1, 2-0) will continue one of the hardest stretches in college women's hockey next weekend when it travels to Madison, Wis. to face the No. 1 University of Wisconsin in a Saturday-Sunday Western Collegiate Hockey Association series at LaBahn Arena.
