Late Rally Proves Not Enough as UMD Women’s Basketball Drops Home Opener to Wisconsin-Parkside

The University of Minnesota Duluth women's basketball team went into the half tied 39-39 with the University of Wisconsin-Parkside Monday night, but could not take control in the second half and fell 79-69 to the Rangers in their home opener.

After falling behind 12-6 to start the game, the Bulldogs collected nine unanswered points with 4:09 left in the first quarter, culminating in a three from Vanessa Bickford, to take a 15-12 lead. UMD then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with a 19-18 advantage. The Bulldogs relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down three shots to account for nine of its 19 points.

UMD kept its first quarter lead intact before going on a five point run starting at the 4:07 mark in the second period, highlighted by a three from Bickford, to increase its lead to 33-27. The Rangers battled back to even it up at 39-39 heading into halftime. The Bulldogs dominated in the paint, scoring 12 of its 20 points close to the basket.

UWP proceeded to take over in the third quarter, out-scoring UMD 19-13 through the period and forcing the Bulldogs into the fourth trailing 58-52. The Bulldogs played well near the basket throughout the third, scoring eight of its 13 points in the paint.

The Bulldogs could not pull any closer in the fourth, losing by a final of 79-69. UMD took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 10 of its 17 points in the paint during the fourth.

Bulldog Notes vs. UWP

The Bulldogs had three players score in double figures, led by Myra Moorjani, who had 15 points and five assists. Lexi Karge tacked on 13 points and Claire Bjorge chipped in as well with 12 points. 

UMD out-rebounded the Rangers 35-30 in Monday's game, led by six boards from Johanna Miller.

Looking Ahead

Bulldog women's basketball (1-2, 0-0 NSIC) continue their non-conference schedule next weekend with a pair of home matchups against the Northern Michigan Wildcats and the Michigan Tech Huskies. Tip-off against the Wildcats is currently set for Saturday, Nov. 23, at 12:00 PM.
