Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Van Wieren and Mobley Net History, Gascon Nabs Shutout in No. 4 Bulldogs 4-0 Win over Vermont

For a program loaded with history, the No. 4 University of Minnesota Duluth women's hockey team added to it once more Friday night at AMSOIL Arena in Duluth, Minn. in a 4-0 win against the University of Vermont.

Just a week after Olivia Wallin reached the 100 point mark, graduate forward Clara Van Wieren joined her current linemate with a goal at 12:17 of the first period. Van Wieren, who became the 25th Bulldog to score 100 or more career points at UMD, wasn't the only player to add their name to the books – fifth-year Olivia Mobley scored the 50th goal of her NCAA career, the 17th total Bulldog player to have reach the milestone at some point in their collegiate career. But it wasn't just the offense that clicked for UMD Friday night, as sophomore Eve Gascon earned her ninth career shutout as proof – the seventh most of any goaltender in program history.

"I thought it definitely took us a little bit to get our feet under us but once we did, I thought we really possessed the puck well, and I thought our penalty kill was outstanding too, which was great," said UMD head coach Laura Schuler. "Another outstanding game from Eve (Gascon), and just so nice to see Olivia Mobley get her 50th goal and Clara Van Wieren get her 100th career point, so proud of those guys."

The Bulldogs came into the series having popped the lid of their offense last weekend with 10 goals in two games, and Friday that trend continued with UMD registering two goals in the opening two periods.

The scoring started with Danielle Burgen, who tucked in a Caitlin Kraemer rebound at 10:39 of the opening frame. UMD doubled that less than two minutes later on Van Wieren's 100 career point to take a 2-0 lead that would hold through the first period.

A mere 1:17 into the second period, sophomore defenseman Ida Karlsson ripped a shot from the low point to add a third goal to the Bulldogs advantage, and then at 16:4, Mobley hammered a power play goal – the 50th score of her career – from the face-off dot to extend UMD's count to 4-0.

In the third period, UMD's defense and penalty kill was on full display, fending off a five minute major just 4:31 into the frame. In fact, the Bulldogs kept the Catamounts scoreless in 11 minutes of their power play, and held Vermont to just five minutes over that span. Gascon did the rest, making saves on all 19 shots she faced for her second shutout of the season and UMD's fourth as a team. The Bulldogs outshot Vermont 39-19 and the Catamounts (3-12-2) had 35 saves from netminder Jane Gervais.

UMD ( 9-5-1) will do it all over again tomorrow at 3:00 p.m. at AMSOIL Arena. Tickets will once again be available for $1.00 to tall fans.

BULLDOG NOTES: UMD improves to 2-0 all-time against Vermont … the Bulldogs now have three players with 100 or more career points on the squad – Clara Van Wieren (44-56-100), Olivia Mobley (50-72-122) and Olivia Wallin (49-54-103) …  Van Wieren is the first UMD player to have played her entire career in the program to reach the 100 career mark since Ashton Bell did it on Nov. 18, 2022 … Eve Gascon is now just two shutouts away from the sixth spot currently held by Jennifer Harss with 11.
