Despite playing to a 0-0 overtime tie with No. 10 St. Cloud State University Saturday, the No. 8 University of Minnesota Duluth women's hockey team made some history at AMSOIL Arena Saturday afternoon on Senior Day.
Â
Team captain and graduate forward Mannon McMahon became the Bulldog program consecutive games played leader after skating in her 166th-straight game at UMD. McMahon took over from Anna Klein, McMahon's teammate for three seasons and who held the record for two years after breaking it during the 2021-22 season.Â
Â
McMahon wasn't alone in marking up the Bulldog history book Saturday – freshman goaltender Ève Gascon earned her fifth shutout of the season (and of her young career), tying her with Jennifer Harss for the most shutouts in a rookie season. Gascon and sophomore goaltender Hailey MacLeod now have 10 shutouts between them – the third most in the NCAA. The netminding duo have also held opponents scoreless in three series so far this season – the first time UMD has posted three shutout series since the 2010-11 season.
Â
"Kind of weird game," said UMD head coach Maura Crowell. "Again, I didn't love our second period, it felt like they got momentum. And our third period yesterday was a lot better than our third today. I think the good news is, you know, we learn a lot about them, and we learn about us. When we see them in two weeks, we can adapt and they're ready for whatever is going to come their way, and today even steps that up a notch."
Â
The Huskies outshot the Bulldogs 39-30 in the game, but Gascon made all 39 saves she faced – including a penalty shot with a minute left in overtime – the first penalty shot stopped by a UMD goaltender since 2016. Jojo Chobak made 30 stops for the Huskies, who are now 15-15-2 overall and 10-14-1 in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association.
Â
The Bulldogs (18-11-2, 15-10-0) will face the Huskies in the first round of the WCHA playoffs in a best-of-three series that will get underway March 1 at AMSOIL Arena. UMD heads to Minneapolis, Minn. next weekend to face the No. 5 University of Minnesota in its regular season finale. The series gets underway Friday at 6:00 p.m.
