Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Power Plays Pave the Way for No. 7 Bulldogs in 2-1 Win Over Minnesota State

The No. 7 University of Minnesota Duluth women's hockey team took care of business Saturday afternoon at AMSOIL Arena with a 2-1 win and series sweep of Minnesota State University, Mankato.

The Bulldogs, who held the Mavericks scoreless in 118:49 minutes of play on the weekend, registered two power play goals, pushing their power play tally in the series to three strong.

"I'm not really thinking about the shutout, I'm thinking about the win and obviously, when you give up one there late, you know, the game gets a lot tighter," said UMD head coach Maura Crowell. "The goal hit off one of our sticks and bounced right to somebody who took a nice shot, so a little unfortunate, but always areas we can continue to get better at. The shifts after that, that's improvement, right? We didn't cave, we got some clears and Clara (Van Wieren)  almost had an empty net goal. Better execution than last weekend, and that's a great improvement for our team."

UMD's first power play goal came at 18:33 of the first period. Senior forward Olivia Wallin ripped a shot from the top of the left circle, and after both Jenna Lawry and Danielle Burgen had touches on it, Wallin skated in and poked the loose puck under sprawled out MSU goaltender Hailey Hansen for her fourth goal of the season and put the Bulldogs ahead 1-0.

That 1-0 lead held until midway through the third period when Clara Van Wieren unloaded a shot from the left circle, again on the power play, at the 11:33 mark. Reece Hunt had the primary assist on Van Wieren's banger, while Hanna Baskin was credited for the second.

The Mavericks finally scored their first goal of the entire series with an extra skater on an empty net at 18:49, but MSU would get no closer, and the Bulldogs earned their sixth sweep of the season and end up 4-0 against MSU over the regular season.

UMD Goaltender Ève Gascon might have been denied a share of the Bulldog  rookie shutout record, but the freshman had 28 saves in the game and helped keep the Mavericks power play scoreless in three attempts. Hansen made 31 stops in the game for MSU, who was outshot by UMD 33-29 and fell to 10-19-0 overall and 4-18-0 in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association.

The Bulldogs (15-11-2, 12-10-0) will travel to Mendota Heights, Minn. next weekend to face the University of St. Thomas for a Friday-Saturday series that drops the puck at 6:00 p.m. both nights.
