UMD Bulldogs "ALLETE" Moments: Competition

Throughout this year, UMD Athletics is partnering with Minnesota Power, ALLETE to highlight the Bulldogs accomplishments in the 3 C's: Classroom, Competition, Community.

Two University of Minnesota Duluth women's hockey players were named finalists for Western Collegiate Hockey Association awards Monday, including sophomore goaltender Hailey MacLeod for WCHA Goaltender of the Year and freshman Ève Gascon for WCHA Rookie of the Year.

The dynamite duo, currently both national Goalie of the Year semifinalists own a combined 12 shutouts – tied for the second most in program history in a single season.

MacLeod leads the NCAA with an eye-popping .960 saves percentage and ranks third in the nation with a 1.05 goals against average – both stats that would set UMD single-season records in those categories if the season ended today. The native of Abbotsford, B.C. has six shutouts, which puts her in a four-way tie for the fourth most shutouts in a single season by a Bulldog goaltender. Overall, MacLeod has a record of 11-4-2.

Gascon set the UMD rookie record for most shutouts with her sixth on Saturday after making all 27 saves she faced. Currently ranked fourth in the NCAA with a .951 saves percentage, which marks the second highest in a single season in program history behind MacLeod, the Mascouche, Quebec product also owns a 1.51 GAA – the 11th highest in the country. Like MacLeod, Gascon is tied for the fourth most shutouts in the NCAA and is in a four-way tie for the most shutouts by a Bulldog goaltender in a single-season (6).

The WCHA will announce its winners of both awards on Wednesday, March 6. The No. 8 Bulldogs face No. 1 Ohio State University in the first semifinal of the WCHA Final Face-Off Friday at 1:03 p.m.
