The University of Minnesota Duluth women's basketball team opened the new calendar year tonight on the road, falling to the Northern State University Wolves 73-43 in their first matchup of the weekend.

UMD opened up the scoring tonight by going on a 5-0 run, culminating in a bucket from Karlen, to take an early lead with 8:06 left in the first quarter. The Bulldogs then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with an 18-16 advantage.
The Bulldogs could not maintain their lead in the second quarter, getting out-scored 26-6 throughout the period and entering halftime trailing 42-24.
UMD started to cut into the deficit after the intermission, bringing it to 50-36 by the end of the third quarter. The Bulldogs knocked down two three-pointers in the quarter to score six of their 12 total points.
UMD could not pull any closer in the fourth, getting out-scored in the period 23-7 and losing by a final of 73-43. The Bulldogs took advantage of their opportunities in the post, scoring four of their seven points in the paint.
Bulldog Notes vs. Northern State
Lexi Karge led the Bulldog offense with 16 points, a game high nine rebounds and three blocks tonight. Lexi Karlen added six points and two blocks and Maria Counts helped out with three points and four assists off of the bench.
The UMD offense put on a ball-movement clinic against the Wolves, notching 14 assists on 19 made shots, recording an assist on 74% of made baskets.
Led by three offensive rebounds from Johanna Miller, UMD did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 11 boards that resulted in seven second chance points. The Bulldog defense also did a great job disrupting Northern State shots in the contest, coming away with six blocks. Karge's three rejections led the way individually for the Bulldogs.
Looking Ahead
Bulldog women's basketball (4-9, 2-6 NSIC) is back for another road matchup tomorrow against the Minnesota State University Moorhead Dragons before returning to Duluth next weekend. Tip-off against the Dragons is currently set for 3:30 PM.
