Gascon and Mayer Earn Weekly WCHA Honors

Two University of Minnesota Duluth women's hockey players were named Western Collegiate Hockey Association Players of the Week on Monday – Eve Gascon earned WCHA Goaltender of the Week honors, while Rae Mayer was claimed the WCHA Rookie of the Week award.

The duo helped lead the Bulldogs to a series split over Minnesota State University, Mankato at AMSOIL Arena over the weekend with scores of 4-0 and 3-1.

Gascon led the WCHA with a .976 saves percentage after making 41 of 42 saves against the Mavericks, including a 24-save perfect performance for a shutout Friday night. The junior goaltender from Mascouche, Quebec  was also part of a UMD penalty kill unit that kept MSU scoreless in the series in five attempts. Gascon backstopped the Bulldogs to a series sweep of MSU, their first over a WCHA opponent this season and earned her fourth shutout of the year. Friday moved her into sole possession of the fifth most career shutouts in UMD history with 14 (she was previously tied with Maddie Rooney in fifth with 13).

This is Gascon's second WCHA weekly honor so far this season.

Mayer tied for the most points by a rookie on the weekend in the WCHA (and in the nation) with three, helping UMD sweep MSU. The native of Chesapeake, Virginia recorded her first multiple point game Friday night (1g, 1a) before adding an assist Saturday in UMD's late comeback win. Mayer now has three goals and three assists for six points in her first eight games at UMD.

The Bulldogs will stay home at AMSOIL Arena this weekend to host the No. 3 University of Minnesota. Game times are set for 7:02 p.m. Friday and 3:02 p.m. Saturday.
