The University of Minnesota Duluth women's basketball team dropped to 1-2 in non-conference play after falling in an overtime thriller on the road against Michigan Technological University Thursday night.
Leading the way for the Bulldogs was
Grace Counts with 18 points and sending a perfect four for four shots beyond the arc. This marked her second double-digit point effort of the year after a 12-point game last weekend at Southeastern Oklahoma State University. Backing her up was
Claire Bjorge and
Lexi Karge, both with ten points each.
Starting off the match, Karge put the Bulldogs up by three 15 seconds in after being awarded a free throw on a contested layup. The following nine minutes in the quarter saw the two teams keep pace with one another, but the Bulldogs would be slightly outscored 13-11 to be down 14-16 by the end of the quarter. Counts in just the first quarter had already put up seven of the team's 14 points.
The second quarter continued with near even scoring efforts as the Huskies narrowly outscored the Bulldogs on a 14-13 run. The Huskies went into halftime with a slim 30-27 lead over the Bulldogs.
The first five minutes of the third quarter had the Bulldogs fall to an eight-point deficit after a 13-8 scoring run from Michigan Tech. With the score at 43-35,
Raegan Krueger,
Vanessa Bickford,
Ashley Fritz, and Bjorge combined for an 11-point comeback to tie the game up at 46-46 before the start of the fourth quarter.
An even 12-12 scoring deadlock would force a tie game with 1:47 left. Counts sent a three-point shot to take a 61-58 lead that looked like it might be the game decider, but three free throws forced an overtime situation with both teams stuck at 61.
The Huskies went on to score 18 points to the Bulldogs' eight points in overtime to force UMD into a 1-2 record to start the season.
All in all, the Bulldogs shot 43.9% (25-57) in field goals, 44.8% (13-29) in three-pointers, and a nearly perfect 85.7% (6-7) in free throws. UMD couldn't keep pace with Michigan Tech's 38 points in the paint, 10 fast-break points, and 15 points off turnovers.
The Bulldogs continue competing in Michigan tomorrow, facing Northern Michigan University in Marquette at 5:30 p.m. (EST).
