Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Gascon and the No. 5 Bulldogs Put the Wraps on Bemidji State and 2025 with 4-0 Shutout

In its last action of 2025, the No. 5 University of Minnesota Duluth women's hockey team flexed offense early and secured its defense late to shutout Bemidji State University 4-0 inside the Sanford Center in Bemidji, Minn.

Eve Gascon's fourth shutout of the season is also the junior netminder's 15 career effort, pulling her one clean sheet shy of fourth all-time in program history where currently former All-American and Swedish Olympian Kim Martin sits with 16.

But UMD needed more than defense to grab its 12th win of the season, and it started with it a first period score for the first time in four games. It was rookie Rae Mayer who did the honors and doubled her series goal total just 3:05 into the opening frame. Mary Kate O'Brien played Mayer on from the neutral zone, and Mayer beat BSU netminder Kaitlin Groess short side for her eight goal of the season.

Held off the scoreboard in the second period, the Bulldogs fired up their offense in the third, and a mere 2:30 into the stanza, Thea Johansson netted her second goal of the weekend, backhanding in a rebound from a Caitlin Kraemer for the 2-0 lead.

Midway through the period, UMD extended its goal count to three with a Kate Kosobud shot that was tipped past Groess by Madison Burr, the freshman forward's second of the year. Just under five minutes later, Danielle Burr redirected the puck down and through on another Kraemer shot to seal the Bulldogs offensive output on the day at 4-0.

The Bulldogs defense, backstopped by Gascon, did the rest, blocking 15 shots and allowing just 20 BSU shots on net – all of which were saved by Gascon. UMD outshot the Beavers 32-20 overall, and both teams were scoreless in three power play attempts. Groess made 28 stops for BSU, who falls to 4-12-2 and 2-11-1 in the Western Collegiate Hockey Conference.

The Bulldogs (12-6-0, 8-6-0) won't be in action again until Jan. 2, 2026, when they take on Harvard University in Belfast, Northern Ireland in the Friendship Series.

BULLDOG NOTES: Eve Gascon is now just one of five goaltenders ever to post 15 or more shutouts over the course of a UMD career … Gascon is tied for fourth in the NCAA with four shutouts so far this season and is tied for the sixth most wins so far by a goaltender (12) … two players had multiple point games – Danielle Burgen (1g, 1a) and Caitlin Kraemer (2a) … Kraemer, Johansson and Burgen all had a series-high three points on the weekend (Kraemer 3a), (Johansson 1g, 2a,) (Burgen 1g, 2a) …  the Bulldogs extended their winning streak against BSU to 19 games Saturday … UMD is 98-22-1 all-time against the Beavers … the Bulldogs first period goal was its first since Nov. 15.
