Junior goaltender Eve Gascon earned her 16th career shutout and the No. 9 University of Minnesota Duluth women's hockey team picked up the Western Collegiate Hockey Association shootout win Friday night after settling for a 0-0 tie with Minnesota State University, Mankato at the Mayo Clinic Health System Event Center in Mankato, Minn.
Gascon's fifth shutout of the season came on 21 saves, including nine in the third period against the Mavericks. The Bulldogs outshot MSU 28-21 in the contest, but ended up in their fourth overtime over their last seven skates.
After settling for the 0-0 tie, UMD earned the extra league point when
Caitlin Kraemer buried the third Bulldog attempt. Gascon was perfect in the shootout, her second shootout shutout over her last three shootouts.
The Bulldogs (12-10-3, 8-8-3) will try to pick up three points Saturday in Mankato in their final regulation game of the season against the Mavericks.
