Josie St. Martin delivered Saturday afternoon just when the No. 7 University of Minnesota Duluth needed her most.
Â
St. Martin scored twice for the Bulldogs, including in overtime, to help lift UMD past the University of Vermont 3-2 inside Gutterson Fieldhouse in Burlington, Vermont. The win gives the Bulldogs a series split with the Catamounts and improves UMD's nonconference record on the young season to 3-1.
Â
Like Friday morning, UVM struck first, this time 12:22 into the opening period. But unlike yesterday, the Bulldogs responded to draw even on St. Martin's first goal of the game. The junior forward buried her own rebound for her first goal of the season to make it a 1-1 skate.
Â
Â
A scoreless second period ensued, despite a 23-11 shots on goal advantage through 40 minutes of play, and against the grain, the Catamounts regained a 2-1 lead just 2:52 into the third period.
Â
Caitlin Kraemer pulled UMD back even with a three-line skate, and using her speed, ripped a shot past Tara Bach from the left side at 6:46 to get the Bulldogs back on the board.
Â
Â
Enter St. Martin in overtime, who chased down Molly Cole's drive to the net and put home Cole's feed into the slot for her second of the game just a minute into overtime.
Â
Â
Eve Gascon earned her third in of the season in her third start with 22 saves in the game. Neither team scored on the power play (UMD 0-of-2, UVM 0-of-3), while UMD outshot the Catamounts 28-24. Bach had 24 saves for UVM, who fall to 1-1 on the season.
Â
The Bulldogs (3-1-0) and who picked up the 100th career NCAA D-I win for head coach Laura Schuler with the win, return to AMSOIL Arena next weekend to open up Western Collegiate Hockey Association play. The Friday-Saturday series will get underway at 6:07 p.m.
