The University of Minnesota Duluth softball team earned a sweep in day three of the Lewis Dome Invitational, forcing a 14-5 victory over Truman State University and a 12-0 win over Wayne State University Friday evening.
To start the evening, UMD would not get on the board at the top of the first as Truman followed up with a one-run lead off
Allyssa Williams. The Bulldog bats picked up in the second inning as
Ava Johnson tripled to get into position to score off an error from the Truman pitcher on a
Taylor Tschida ground ball.
With no outs, the scoring continued with a double from
Daphne Evans, a sacrifice fly from
Morgan McMillan, and a home run by
Kendal Jenkins for a 5-1 lead. Williams quieted the Truman bats to let the Bulldogs force another run in to start the third inning with Evans singling to bring home Tschida, who reached base on a double.
Truman, now trailing 6-1, found an avenue to rally three runs off a double, triple, and single to make a 6-4 game heading into the fourth inning. That would be the closest TSU was to UMD, as they scored only one more time in the fifth inning.
A combined effort in the later half of the game earned eight more runs for UMD off the bats of Johnson (single, one RBI), Jenkins (solo home run), Evans (triple, two RBIs), McMillan (double, one RBI),
Serena Timmer (single, one RBI), and
Emma Ambroz (single, one RBI). The 14-5 win marks the Bulldogs' greatest scoring effort of the season.
Game two continued the trend with the Bulldog bats opening the top of the first with five runs.
Sierra Thomas helped the first run in on a bunt to bring Evans home.
Khendal Johnson continued with a single to bring McMillan home for a 2-0 lead. An
Ava Johnson homer ushered in the next three runs to take the dominant lead into the bottom of the inning.
With
Emmie Sylvia-Cochran on the mound, Wayne State only earned one hit to strand one runner on in the first. The Warriors were unable to score for the duration as the Bulldogs continued with
Paige Johnson (triple and double, three RBIs), Thomas (walk, one RBI),
Taylor Dawyduk (double, two RBIs), and Timmer (sacrifice fly, one RBI), forcing in another seven runs to force a mercy rule by the end of the fifth inning.
With the game one win, Williams now has a 4-2 record on the mound to start the season after dealing five strikeouts. Sylvia-Cochran earned her second shutout of the season on the mound in game two with seven strikeouts for a 4-0 record.
The Bulldogs compete in their final matchup of the Lewis Dome Invitational tomorrow against Hillsdale College. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. inside the Rosemont Dome.
