Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Kosobud and the No. 10 Bulldogs Score Late to Beat Bemidji State 3-2

The No. 10 University of Minnesota Duluth women's hockey team had two alternatives Friday night at AMSOIL Arena in Duluth, Minn.– get rattled by the things it couldn't control on the ice or battle through it, and the Bulldogs successfully chose the latter.

UMD bounced Bemidji State University 3-2 on a late game goal despite losing leading scorer Caitlin Kraemer early in the second period and a called off goal late in the third. The Bulldogs got a team-high two points on two assists from sophomore defenseman Kate Kosobud, whose play took the form of a forward to help UMD pull off its 20th straight-win against the Beavers.

"To see the team bounce back at the end and get that game-winning goal, I thought that was a big moment," said Bulldog head coach Laura Schuler. "You know, I thought our team faced a ton of different types of adversity tonight. ?Obviously getting the five and us being able to kill that off, I thought was huge, and then we got the go ahead goal and that getting called back. I really felt like our team on the bench, we talked about the importance of being connected on the ice as well as on the bench and in the locker room, and the energy that I felt on the bench tonight, despite all of those things that were happening, that was happening, I thought our girls really pulled together and the energy was great and it was so nice to see. It was awesome."

BSU showed early it was in upset mode, and 5:43 into the first period, the Beavers took their one and only lead of the game on a goal from Hailey Armstrong. Just 2:27 later, UMD's power play responded when Caitlin Kraemer took a feed from Josie St. Martin in the high slot and reclaimed UMD's season point lead on her 12th goal of the season (her 22 point of the year).

Kraemer's time was limited, however, and was sent off the ice and to the locker room after a Beaver challenge for slewfooting at 6:21 of the second period. The Bulldogs didn't break, and freshman forward Molly Cole sniped a shot over BSU goaltender Ava Hills right shoulder to give UMD its first lead of the skate at 18:54 of the frame.

The Beavers used a power play to equalize at 2-2 5:56 into the third, but the Bulldogs thought they had won it with 3:54 left on the clock when Danielle Burgen's goal was called off despite a UMD challenge. The goal was still officially ruled no goal for UMD.

Once again, the Bulldogs powered through, and it was all Kosobud who made the decision to drive to the net instead of behind it to set up Zoey Krock on the doorstep at 17:45 for the game-winner.

Named a national semifinalist for goaltender of the year just hours before the puck dropped, Eve Gascon made 29 saves for the Bulldogs, who were 1-of-3 on the power play and outshot BSU 38-31 and 11-7 in final 20 minutes of play. Mills had 35 stops for the Beavers, who fell to 6-20-3 overall and 3-19-1 in WCHA play with the loss.

UMD (14-12-3, 10-10-3) will skate for the series sweep tomorrow with an early matinee puck drop time of 2:02 p.m.
