The University of Minnesota Duluth softball team faced the University of Sioux Falls in a doubleheader at the Sanford Diamonds, dropping both with final scores of 7-0 and 3-1.
In the first game, UMD struggled as Sioux Falls took an early lead, capitalizing on a Bulldog error to score three runs in the first inning. A bunt single drove in the first run, followed by a stolen base and a single, leading to a 3-0 advantage after one inning.Â
The Cougars extended their lead in the third inning after a walk, a single, and another error allowed a run to score. A double then drove in two more runs, making it 6-0 at the end of the third inning.Â
Sioux Falls added another run in the fourth inning with two singles, concluding the game with a score of 7-0.
Emmie Sylvia-Cochran pitched a complete game for the Bulldogs, allowing eight hits and seven earned runs over six innings. She struck out three batters and walked two while facing 30 batters in total.Â
Morgan McMillan recorded one hit and secured one stolen base, while
Kendal Jenkins also added one hit and a stolen base.
Khendal Johnson reached base twice, drawing two walks during her plate appearances.
In the second game, Sioux Falls again took the lead, scoring two runs in the second inning due to a throwing error and a single, ending the inning 2-0 in favor of the Cougars.Â
USF extended its lead in the fifth inning with three singles, bringing the score to 3-0 by the end of that inning. UMD responded in the seventh inning when
Sierra Thomas reached base on a throwing error, followed by singles from Johnson and
Ava Johnson, loading the bases.
Paige Johnson then hit a sacrifice fly, allowing Thomas to score, but the Bulldogs ultimately fell short, trailing 3-1.
Allyssa Williams pitched a complete game, allowing six hits and three runs, with only one earned run over six innings. She recorded four strikeouts and did not issue any walks, facing 25 batters in total.Â
Ava Johnson stood out with two hits in three at-bats, while
Serena Timmer contributed with a double, finishing with one hit.
Paige Johnson, stepping in as a pinch hitter, drove in one run with her lone at-bat.
The Bulldogs will face Southwest Minnesota State University tomorrow for their final doubleheader of the week, starting at 12:00 p.m. on Mustang Field.
