UMD Softball Splits With Northern State on the Road

The University of Minnesota Duluth softball team experienced a mixed doubleheader against Northern State University at the Koehler Hall of Fame Field in Aberdeen, South Dakota. In the first game, the Bulldogs secured a 9-4 victory, while they fell to the Wolves 4-1 in the second matchup.

In game one, the Bulldogs jumped to an early lead with a five-run first inning and maintained control throughout the game. The strong offensive display began with Daphne Evans walking and stealing second, followed by Ava Johnson's single that advanced Evans to third. Evans scored on a walk by Khendal Johnson, and subsequent plays, including a fielder's choice by Paige Johnson and a single by Serena Timmer, forced in five runs. Northern State managed one run in the bottom of the inning, making it 5-1 in favor of the Bulldogs after the first inning.

The third inning saw the Bulldogs extend their lead. Khendal Johnson doubled and was brought home by a single from Morgan McMillan. Later, Paige Johnson scored on a single by Emma Ambroz, making it 7-3 after the Wolves added two runs of their own through a home run by Boben.

In the sixth inning, the Bulldogs added their final two runs as Ava Johnson advanced and scored on a fielder's choice and a throwing error, followed by Sierra Thomas scoring on a single by Khendal Johnson, setting the lead to 9-4. The Bulldogs' defense held the Wolves scoreless in the final innings, securing the win.

Emmie Sylvia-Cochran pitched six innings, allowing eight hits and four earned runs while striking out eight batters. She issued five walks and gave up a home run but managed to secure her 11th win of the season, bringing her record to 11-6. Ashley Mandell provided solid relief, pitching one inning without allowing a hit, run, or walk, to close out the game.

Ava Johnson led the team with three hits, scoring two runs and adding two stolen bases. Khendal Johnson contributed with two hits, including a double, and drove in two runs while scoring twice. McMillan recorded two RBIs, complementing her single hit.

In game two, the Bulldogs fell to the Wolves with a final score of 4–1. UMD tallied four hits and recorded one run in the second inning, but the Wolves' three-run fifth inning secured their victory.

Northern State took an early lead in the first inning off a homer to left center, putting them up 1–0. UMD responded in the second inning when Sierra Thomas doubled to left center and later scored when Paige Johnson singled and advanced on a throwing error, tying the game at 1–1.

In the fifth inning, the Wolves broke the tie. A pinch-hitter scored on a wild pitch after reaching third base, and another two singles added two more runs, extending NSU's lead to 4–1.

The Bulldogs were unable to close the gap in the final innings. Despite efforts, including a single from Daphne Evans and a walk by Taylor Dawyduk in the seventh inning, the team left three runners on base.

Allyssa Williams pitched over four innings, allowing seven hits and four earned runs, with one walk and two strikeouts. She also surrendered a home run and was charged with a wild pitch, falling to a 7-9 record on the mound. Ashley Mandell provided relief, pitching in two scoreless innings, not allowing a hit or walk, while striking out two batters.

Evans recorded one hit and stole a base in her start as center fielder. Thomas added to the offense by scoring one run and hitting a double. Paige Johnson contributed with a hit and an RBI as the designated hitter.

The Bulldogs continue their road trip tomorrow against the University of Jamestown, with the doubleheader set to start at 12:00 p.m.
