22 Runs Sends UMD Softball Past Minnesota Crookston

The University of Minnesota Duluth softball team achieved an impressive doubleheader sweep against the University of Minnesota Crookston, winning the first game 13–0 and the second game 9–1 at James S. Malosky Stadium.

In the first game, the Bulldogs showcased their power at the plate with three home runs, contributing to a seven-run second inning. In the first inning, Kendal Jenkins walked, and Sierra Thomas doubled to left field, driving in Jenkins for the initial run. The score was 1–0 in favor of the Bulldogs after the first inning. 

The second inning saw an offensive surge from UMD. Morgan McMillan walked, setting the stage for Taylor Dawyduk, who homered to left field, bringing in McMillan. Later, Ava Johnson homered to right field, scoring Lauren Jenkins. Thomas added to the tally with a walk, followed by a single from Khendal Johnson that brought in Jenkins. McMillan capped the inning with a single that scored two more runs, resulting in a 7-run inning. The score stood at 8–0.

In the fourth inning, UMD capitalized on defensive errors by the Golden Eagles. Thomas reached on an error, allowing Ava Johnson to score. Dawyduk then hit a grand slam, bringing the total to five runs in the inning. After four innings, the Bulldogs led 13–0. The game concluded after the fifth inning with UMD maintaining its shutout, ending the game with a final score of 13–0.

Allyssa Williams delivered a stellar performance for the Bulldogs, pitching a complete game in the victory. She allowed only three hits over five innings while striking out five batters and issuing no walks. Williams kept the opposing team scoreless, not allowing any earned runs and only hitting one batter. 

Ava Johnson hit a home run, driving in two runs and scoring twice in the game. Dawyduk recorded six RBIs with two home runs, contributing significantly to the team's offensive output. McMillan added two RBIs and scored twice, showcasing a strong performance at the plate.

In the second game, the Bulldogs secured a decisive 9–1 victory, highlighted by a seven-run fourth inning. In the second inning, Taylor Dawyduk tied the game with a solo home run, making the score 1–1 by the end of the inning. 

In the third inning, Emma Ambroz singled and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Kendal Jenkins, giving UMD a 2–1 lead by the end of the third inning. 

The fourth inning saw an offensive surge from the Bulldogs as Dawyduk hit her second home run of the game, a two-run shot, followed by a two-run homer from Daphne Evans. Khendal Johnson then singled up the middle, driving in two more runs. The inning concluded with UMD leading 9–1.

The Bulldogs maintained their lead through the fifth inning, preventing any further scoring from the Golden Eagles. 

Maddy Walsh delivered a strong performance, pitching a complete game and securing the win with a five-inning effort. She allowed just four hits and one earned run while striking out four batters, issuing only one walk, and maintaining command throughout her outing. Her performance marked her first complete win of the season.

Evans made a significant impact by hitting a home run and driving in two runs. Dawyduk contributed with two home runs and three RBIs, scoring twice in the game. Johnson added to the team's offense with a hit and two RBIs. 

The Bulldogs now head on the road Sunday to face Minnesota State University Moorhead. The doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 12:00 p.m.
