Biography

AS A BULLDOG: Was redshirted as a first-year freshman in 2012. BEFORE UMD: Landed All-Lake Conference (first team), Minneapolis Star-Tribune All-Metro (second team) and Associated Press All-State (honorable mention) acclaim in 2011 after setting a Minnetonka High School single-season record for tackles with 145 (87 solos and 58 assists) .... was a two-year starter and captained the Skippers as a senior while playing under head coach Dave Nelson, a standout linebacker himself with the Bulldogs during the mid-1970s and a member of the UMD Athletic Hall of Fame ... voted the team's Most Valuable Defensive Player in 2011 ... racked up 192 career total tackles ... shined in the classroom as well during his time at Minnetonka High School ... was the recipient of a 2012 National Football Foundation (Minnesota Chapter) Scholar-Athlete. award in addition to being 2011 Academic All-State honoree ... is the son of Alan Bates and Penny Perrault.
