Biography

AS A BULLDOG: 
2018: Filled a backup linebacker role for the third consecutive season ... made two appearances (both at home) and had four total tackles to show for it ... missed a pair of outings while nursing a lower body injury ... counted himself among the 18 Bulldogs to qualify for the NSIC All-Academic Team.
2017: Furnished the Bulldog linebacking brigade with reserve reinforcement ... registered his first collegiate tackle in the last of his three outings of the year (on Nov. 4 against visiting Minnesota Crookston) .... also recovered one fumble as a sophomore ... qualified for the NSIC All-Academic Team.
2016: Found playing time scarce -- was limited to once appearance (against Mary on Nov. 5) and posted no defensive statistics in that 75-14 home finale victory over the Marauders.
2015: Was red-shirted as a first-year freshman.
BEFORE UMD: Started two years (safety) at Rosemount High School ... garnered All-South Suburban Conference and Minneapolis Star-Tribune All-Metro honors in 2014 ... captained the Irish as a senior that fall ... played for head coach Jeff Erdmann ... also lettered twice in baseball (pitcher) at Rosemount H.S.
PERSONAL: Is the son of Dave and the late Susan Birkholz (a UMD softball alumnae) ... his uncle, Gary Birkholz, started three years on the Bulldogs' offensive line (1979-80), became the school's fourth Associated Press Little All-American as a senior, and in January 2015 was posthumously inducted into the UMD Athletic Hall of Fame ... is majoring in marketing at UMD.
COLLEGIATE HIGHS: Total Tackles - 2 vs. Mary (11/13/18) and MSU-Moorhead (9/8/18).
