AS A BULLDOG:
2017: Landed full-time employment at an outside linebacker post ... started 11 of 12 games for the NSIC North Division champion Bulldogs ... closed out the year with 25 tackles (11 solos and 14 assists) to his credit ... five of those stops (a career best) came in a 23-14 road triumph at Minnesota State-Moorhead in early October ... parlayed his first (and only) collegiate interception into a touchdown -- an 11 yard return -- against Minnesota Crookston on Nov. 4 ... was credited with 4.5 tackles for a loss.
2016: Played a more prominent part in the Bulldogs' linebacking situation, lining up directly behind starter Bryce Juedes on the outside ... responded to that additional commitment (11 games) by accumulating six solo tackles and assisting on six other stops ... also was credited with one force fumble and a quarterback hurry.
2015: Appeared in six games, all in a supporting linebacker role ... had a hand in three tackles, including one on the kickoff return unit.
2014: Was red-shirted as a first-year freshman.
BEFORE UMD: Four-year letterman (quarterback, defensive back and tight end) and three-year starter at Prescott High School ... played under head coach Matt Smith ....  2013 first team All-Middle Border Conference selection (quarterback and defensive back) 2012 second team All-Middle Border Conference selection (defensive back) ... 2013 All-District selection (quarterback and defensive back) ... WFCA All-Star game selection 2014 North small squad ... two-year Cardinal team captain (2012-13) ... set the school single season record for most pass yards his senior year ... set a school record for most career interceptions with 13 ... also lettered four times in baseball (All-Conference outfielder) and two times in basketball (forward). 
PERSONAL: Is the son of Mark and Sheila Helmer ... his father played football at the University of North Dakota while his cousin, Ben Helmer, was a tight end for UMD from 2009-12 and scored the Bulldogs' first touchdown in the 2010 NCAA II title game ... is majoring in marketing at UMD.
COLLEGIATE HIGHS: Total Tackles - 5 at Minnesota State-Moorhead (10/7/17). Sacks - 1.5 at Northern State (10/14/17). Tackles For Loss - 2.0 (at Northern State). Interceptions - 1 vs. Minnesota Crookston (11/4/17).
