University of Minnesota Duluth indoor track and field teams each had an athlete named as Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Player of the Week, the league office announced today.
Sara Frederickson, a freshman from Elk River, Minn., was named as the NSIC's Women's Track Athlete of the Week for her efforts at the Warren Bowlus Open last weekend. She finished first in the 5,000-meter run, clocking in with a time of 17:53.11--a time that met the NCAA's provisional standard qualifying her for the national indoor track and field meet. Frederickson also bettered the fastest time posted in the NSIC this season by more than a minute.
The award is the second such award of the season for the women's track and field team this season.
Jason Sydeko, a sophomore from Blaine, Minn. placed first at the Warren Bowlus Open on Saturday with a high jump mark of 6' 6.75\" narrowly missing the NCAA provisional mark on his final attempt.
This is the third Player of the Week this season for the UMD men's indoor track and field team this season. Dan Soldner garnered the award Jan. 26 and Robb Winterfeld earned Player of the Week accolades last week. (Feb. 2).
The UMD indoor track and field teams will be back in action Thursday when they their second home event of the 2003-04 season at 4:00 p.m. in the Ward Wells Fieldhouse. The team will also travel to Eastbay Invitational hosted by the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point with events begining at 10:30 a.m.
