After the first day of competition at the 2004 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Track and Field Championships, Winona State University holds a 10-point lead over the University of Minnesota Duluth for the women's team title while UMD finds itself more then 40 points ahead of its closest competitor, Concordia University-St. Paul (52), on the men's side of things.
A pair of NSIC records fell in during the first day of competition as UMD's Erin Foss set a new mark in the 10,000-meter run (38:07.57) and Miranda Boepple from Northern State University bettered the old conference women's javelin record be more than eight feet (128' 10\").
