UMD WOMEN CAGERS COMPLETE CLASSIC WEEKEND WITH WIN OVER NORTHERN MICHIGAN

The Bulldog women's basketball team wrapped up it's American Family Insurance Classic weekend in style with a second win Saturday night as they beat Northern Michigan University 82-59 at Romano Gymnasium.

UMD, which scored 155 points in the two contests, jump-started it's offense again by executing it's defense. The Bulldogs completely shut down the Northern Michigan attack in the last seven minutes of the first half and held them scoreless from 8:57 on the game clock until 1:54. The swarming UMD team defense kept the Wildcats off the glass by pulling down 38 rebounds to Northern Michigan's 21, only seven which were on the offensive side of the glass.

\"Our goal is to use our defense to create our offense,\" said UMD head coach Sue Fiero. \"That's a credit to our whole team.\"

Fiero got some offensive firepower in the form of AFI Classic MVP, Lindsey Dietz. Dietz racked up a sizzling 24 first-half points from the Bulldogs fast break and consistent shooting from the charity stripe. The MVP had a game-high, as well as tournament-high, 33 points on the night. Dietz also led UMD with her glass cleaning expertise that brought home 14 rebounds. Dietz wasn't the only Bulldog to bring her arsenal, though, as Alissa Pauly exchanged her previous career-high, set last week, for an 18 point performance against the Wildcats. Pauly was spot on with 6-for-9 shooting from the field and 4-for-6 shooting from downtown, which landed her on the All-Classic team along with Dietz.

\"I think tonight we put 40 minutes together,\" said Fiero. \"This was a great 40 minute basketball game. I was proud of the way we played.\"

Northern Michigan, (0-2), was led by Tera Opperman with 15 points and Kelsey Deacon, who added 14. Allison Carroll, who turned in a 21 point performance the day before, joined Pauly and Dietz on the AFI Classic team.

UMD, 4-1 and red-hot on a four-game winning streak, returns to Romano Gym on Thursday, December 1 to take on Northland College. Game time is set for 6 p.m., with the men following at 8 p.m.
