BULLDOG AND GOPHERS FIT TO BE TIED

Isaac Reichmuth celebrated a milestone Friday night by turning in his best performance of the somewhat young 2005-06 season.

The senior goaltender turned aside 35 of 37 shots in his 100th career start to help the University of Minnesota Duluth preserve a 2-2 overtime tie with the University of Minnesota before a sellout crowd of 5,379 at the Duluth Entertainment and Convention Center.

The Bulldogs staked their intrastate rivals to a 1-0 lead 14:27 into the first period when Phil Kessell scored off a rebound while Minnesota was on the power play. With UMD skating with a two man advantage, senior center Tim Stapleton ripped in shot from the left side of goal mouth off a nifty feed from freshman left wing Mason Raymond to even the game at 1-1 at the 12:46 mark the the second period. Freshman left wing Andrew Carroll's first collegiate goal with just under seven minutes remaining in regulation gave UMD is only lead of the game. Carroll's wrist shot from the left faceoff circle fluttered over the right shoulder of Minnesoa goaltender Kellen Briggs, who finished with 33 saves on the night. Stapleton picked up one of the two assists on the Carroll score for his fifth point in the past three games. Just 2:21 later, Minnesota drew even on Gino Guyer's fourth goal of the season.

The Bulldogs, who extended their unbeaten streak to three games, were one-for-four on the power play while the seventh-ranked Gophers scored once on six opportunities with the extra man. Each team, however, was unable to capitalize on a five-minute power play. UMD senior defenseman Steve Czech received a checking from behind major penalty and a game misconduct 3:50 after the opening faceoff while Chris Harrington was whistled for that same infraction in the final 2:45 of the third period.

Reichmuth, who is now 6-2-1 in nine career appearances against Minnesota, made 27 of his season-high 35 saves from the second period on.

UMD, which is unbeaten in eight of its last 10 games with Minnesoa (7-2-1), goes to 1-4-2 on the year and 1-0-2 in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association. The No. 7 Gophers are 3-2-2 and 3-1-1 .

The two clubs will conclude their two-game series Saturday night.
