The No. 4 University of Minnesota Duluth women’s hockey team was looking to end a rare three-game losing streak that dated back to Jan. 21, 2006 when they traveled to The Ohio State University. The Bulldogs scored early in the first period and never looked back as they held on for a 3-2 victory at the OSU Ice Rink.
In a similar fashion to the opening series with the Buckeyes several members of the UMD roster earned first of the season or in their careers. Junior F
Noemie Marin started the scoring for the Bulldogs at the 4:35 mark of the first period with an assist from junior F
Jessica Koizumi. Koizumi is now on a three-game assist scoring streak dating back to Jan. 27, 2006.
In the opening stanza senior F
Larissa Luther earned her first goal of the 2005-2006 season with assists from freshman F
Tawni Mattila and sophomore D
Rachael Drazan at 15:41.
UMD would hold on to the two goal lead until 4:06 in the second period when Jana Harrigan snapped the shutout from goaltender
Riitta Schaublin.
With just less than two minutes left in the second period rookie F
Sara O’Toole earned her sixth game-winning tally of the season. She was assisted on the goal by freshman D
Myriam Trepanier, who garnered her first career.
The Buckeyes would add an early goal in the third period to bring the game within one, but UMD held on for the victory.
The Bulldogs, now 18-6-1 overall and 16-6-1 in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association will finish up its series with the Buckeyes tomorrow afternoon at 3:07 p.m.
Notes:Today was the first game without the services of rookies
Michaela Lanzl and
Mari Pehkonen, who are in Turino, Italy for the XX Winter Olympic Games…there were no power-play goals scored in the game.
