WAGERS CLUTCH IN 60-59 BULLDOG WIN OVER NEBRASKA-OMAHA

Kim Wagers may be the most unassuming starter on the University of Minnesota Duluth women's basketball team, but Saturday afternoon in the Sapp Fieldhouse in Omaha, the junior from Moose Lake, Minn. assumed responsibility for the fate of her team.

With just 6.9 seconds left on the clock, Wagers stepped to the free-throw line with the Bulldogs trailing by one and cooly knocked down both attempts to secure a 60-59 win over the University of Nebraska-Omaha.

UMD started the game firing a red-hot 54.5 percent, towering over the Mavericks who suffered through the first half shooting only 25.9 percent on 7-of-27 from the field, and a ghastly 1-of-11 from 3-point for 9.1 percent. The Bulldogs held UNO scoreless for the remaining eight and a half minutes, expanding their lead to 30-21 at halftime.

The tide would turn, however, after UMD led by 11 points with 15:18 remaining 40-29. The Mavericks strung together a 15-4 run that evened the score (44-44) with just 6:50 to play.

The score was close down the stretch, with the Bulldogs largest lead in the final minutes a four-point advantage after Katie Winkelman converted a three-point play. UNO countered with two buckets from Ashley Freerksen, including a 3-pointer, which gave the Mavericks a one-point, 59-58 lead with less than 30 seconds to play.

Enter Wagers, who had already had a career night from the floor with 13 points up until she was fouled. Wagers, who ranked 3rd on the team from the charity stripe coming into the contest as an 80 percent shooter, calmly casted her ballot and sealed the victory for UMD.

Winkelman led all scorers with 21 points, while Wagers rounded out her career-night with 15 points and nine boards. Katy Freeman added 12 points in the win.

The Mavericks (12-4, 0-2), who had been a perfect 7-0 coming into the NCC contest, were led from the floor by Karen Thies, who had 17 points and seven rebounds on the afternoon.

The Bulldogs (11-6, 2-2), who are a perfect 6-0 when they out rebound opponents as they did Saturday to UNO (32-31), step out of NCC play Monday night when they visit the campus of South Dakota State. Tip-off in Brookings, S.D. is set for 7 p.m.
