Curt Wiese, who spent the past two seasons as the head football coach at Marietta College (Ohio), has been named the University of Minnesota Duluth's offensive coordinator.
\"We're excited to have Curt on board -- especially at such a critical time with the recruiting process wrapping up and spring ball on the horizon,\" said UMD head coach
Bob Nielson. \"He has a lot of experience in developing a balanced offensive attack which is congruent with my coaching philosophy.\"
During his two-year head coaching tenure at Marietta, an NCAA Division III institution, Wiese (WEEZ-ee) rolled up a 9-11 overall record, including a 6-4 mark in 2006. The Stoughton, Wis, native joined the Pioneer football staff in 2003 when he became the team's offensive coordinator -- a duty he continued to maintain after he was promoted to head coach. In five years of overseeing the Marietta offense, Wiese helped produce two All-Americans, 12 All-Ohio Athletic Conference selections and five Academic All-OAC honorees. Wiese, who was a coaching colleague of current Bulldog assistant
Nick Goeser during his initial two seasons with the Pioneers (2003-04), was a finalist for the 2005 American Football Coaches Association Division III Assistant Coach of the Year Award.
Prior to his arrival in Marietta, Wiese served as a graduate assistant at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, supervising the tight ends for two years and the offensive line for one season. Wiese entered the coaching arena fresh off a four-year collegiate playing career. After three seasons at Minnesota State University-Mankato (1995-97), Wiese transferred to the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, where as a senior in 1998, quarterbacked the Pointers to a share of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference title.
Wiese, whose appointment at UMD begins on Monday (Feb. 18), graduated from Minnesota State-Mankato in 2000 with a B.A. degree in technology education and received a Master's degree in educational professional development from Wisconsin-Eau Claire two years later. He and his wife, Jenny, have two daughters -- Alexis and Makenna.
