Tanya Bauer, who debuted as the University of Minnesota Duluth’s head women’s basketball coach this past winter, has resigned effective immediately to take an assistant coaching position at Southern Illinois University, a NCAA Division I institution.

“I would like to thank UMD athletic director Bob Nielson and Bulldog men's basketball coach, Gary Holquist, for their unwavering support during my short tenure here at UMD,” said Bauer. “I would also be remiss if I did not thank UMD Chancellor Kathryn Martin for providing me with my first opportunity to be a head coach.

“I sincerely appreciate the relationships I have established at UMD and I will miss being a part of an athletic program that cares so much about its student-athletes.”

The 33-year old Bauer directed the Bulldogs to a 4-23 overall record and 1-11 mark in North Central Conference play.

“We are disappointed that coach Bauer has chosen to leave our program so soon,” said Nielson. “Our hope was that she would have continued to provide leadership for the Bulldog women’s basketball program for some time.

“Our plan is to now move ahead and get a head coach in place as swiftly as possible.”

Bauer, a native of Durand, Wis., became the sixth head coach in the history of the UMD women’s basketball program when she was hired during the spring of 2007.

Prior to joining the Bulldogs, Bauer spent seven years as a NCAA I women’s basketball assistant – four seasons at Santa Clara University (2003-07) and three at Drake University (2000–03).
