University of Minnesota Duluth sophomores Jessica Wong, Mariia Posa and Jennifer Harss are spending the week in Kreuzlingen, Switzerland for the 2011 MLP Cup, while their Bulldog counterparts are back on the ice to get the second-half of the 2010-11 season underway.
Suiting up for Canada's National Women's Under-22 Team, Wong is hoping to grab her second MLP gold in as many years after helping Canada reclaim the top spot last January in Ravensburg, Germany by scoring two goals in the gold medal game.
Wong dished out an assist from the blueline in Tuesday morning's 5-0 win over host Switerland, while her Bulldog teammate, sophomore defenseman Posa helped Finland (with former UMD captain Saara Tuominen) defeat Sweden and UMD alum Erika Holst 4-3 Tuesday. Posa recorded one shot in Finland's opening win, and was 0 in her plus/minus rating on the day.
Sophomore netminder Harss -- the third current Bulldog suiting up for her respective national team in Switzerland this week -- will suit up for Team Germany against the host country Wednesday. Harss and Germany will face Wong and Canada on Thursday, Jan. 6, the final preliminary game in tournament.N
No. 4 UMD began its first practice of 2011 on Monday, but will not compete against outside competition until the following weekend, Jan. 14-15, when the Bulldogs face WCHA rival the University of Minnesota. Both games for that weekend, set to take place in Ridder Arena, will get underway at 7:07 p.m.
