The University of Minnesota Duluth baseball team signed a pair of recruits to add to its 2013 class during the early signing period this year, snagging seniors Jake Steinbach and Nick Omodt.
“This is going to be a larger recruiting class, so this gets us off on the right foot,” head coach Bob Rients said. “Signing both players begins to address our need to score runs. These two are both talented offensively, and have a mental toughness that's going to be a benefit when they get to this level. We're excited to work with them here and make them the same sort of go-to players here that they've become at the high school level.”
Steinbach, a senior at Wayzata, started his past two seasons with the Trojans, playing a mixture of positions including catcher, second base and outfield. Earning All-Lake Conference honors as a junior, Steinbach hit .404 with three home runs last season. He will join his brother, Lucas, on the 2013 team. Lucas Steinbach will be a junior this spring. The two brothers' older sister, Jill, also participated in college athletics, running track at the University of Minnesota.
Omodt, a left-handed hitting senior at Edina High School, started two seasons as an outfielder for the Hornets. Omodt earned All-Classic Lake Conference honors his junior season, leading the team in batting average, on-base percentage and stolen bases. Omodt hit .450, reaching base at a .558 clip. He will be a team captain this spring under Coach Carter Freeman.
