UMD COACHING LEGEND JIM MALOSKY DIES AT AGE 82

Jim Malosky, who presided over the University of Minnesota Duluth football program for four storied decades and is the namesake of the Bulldogs' home facility, died Sunday afternoon (Dec. 4) of respiratory failure in Minneapolis, 10 days shy of his 83rd birthday.

Malosky(color)Malosky, a native of Crosby, Minn., retired from the Bulldog coaching ranks following the 1997 season after suffering a stroke. At the time, he was the all-time winningest coach in NCAA Division II history and held down the No. 11 spot on college football's all-time coaching win list, amassing a 255-125-13 overall record -- for a .665 winning percentage. Malosky, who finished with a sub-.500 record just twice during his final 28 seasons on the sidelines, guided the Bulldogs to three Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference titles (1960, 1961, and 1973) and six Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference championships (1979, 1980, 1985, 1990, 1995 and 1996). His 1980 club was the first UMD team to go through an entire season unbeaten and untied (10-0) and was ranked ninth in the final NCAA II poll. Between Nov. 3, 1979 and Oct. 24, 1981, Malosky's Bulldogs also assembled a 20-game winning streak, which remains a school record.  In addition, no less than 20 of his players attained various All-American honors during his tenure and five went on to play in the National Football League. Chosen the Coach of the Year by the MIAC, the NSIC, and NAA District 13 on 10 occasions during his 40-season tenure, Malosky is a member of the UMD Athletic Hall of Fame (1999), the University of Minnesota Hall of Fame (1996), the Minnesota High School Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame (1994), the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Hall of Fame (2000) and the DECC Hall of Fame (2002).  In April 2009, he was presented with the Distinguished Minnesotan Award by the Minnesota Chapter of the National Football Foundation for his lifelong contributions to football in the state of Minnesota.

Malosky also served as an associate professor in UMD's Department of Health, Physical Education and malosky100thwin.jpgRecreation and spent five seasons (1958-63) with the Bulldog men's basketball program in an assistant coaching role.

Funeral services for Malosky will be held on Dec. 17 at 1:30 p.m. at the First Lutheran Church in Duluth. Visitation is scheduled from 4 to 7 p.m. the previous day and for one hour prior to the funeral.
