The Western Collegiate Hockey Association unveiled its 2010-11 all-league honorees Thursday and the University of Minnesota Duluth certainly had a presence.
For openers, two members of the nation's highest scoring line -- center Jack Connolly and left winger Mike Connolly -- were chosen to the All-WCHA Western Collegiate Hockey Association first team while their right wing comrade, senior Justin Fontaine, secured second team acclaim for the third year in a row. Furthermore, freshman defenseman Justin Faulk landed a spot on the All-WCHA third team and joined right winger J.T. Brown on the league's All-Rookie Team.
Jack Connolly, who became just the fourth Bulldog ever -- and the first in 25 years -- to earn first team status twice, closed out the 2010-11 regular season with the WCHA's highest overall scoring harvest (a career-best 51 points) and the second most assists (38) of any player in the country. The 2009-10 All-American reached the 50-point plateau faster (35 games) than any Bulldog in 17 years (Chris Marinucci did in 32 outings on his way to receiving the Hobey Baker Memorial Award in 1993-94) and has not been blanked in the scoring column for two straight games since the 2009 WCHA Final Five
Fellow junior Mike Connolly currently holds down the No. 5 spot on the WCHA overall scoring charts with a career-high 45 points and is second in goals with 23. The Calgary, Albert, product Is just the second NCAA I-era Bulldog ever to open his career with three straight 40-point seasons and four weeks ago (Feb. 5) he equalled a Bulldog single-game record by scoring five goals in a 6-4 win over the University of Minnesota. Connolly owns a team-leading .221 shooting percentage this winter and is a +19.
Fontaine, a native of Bonnyville, Alberta, is third among his WCHA brethren in both scoring (46 points) and power play goals (10) at the moment to go with a Bulldog-best +21 rating. Since the opening of the 2008-09, no one in the WCHA has racked up more points (140) than Fontaine, who is only the third three-time All-WCHA pick of any kind UMD has ever produced, joining defenseman Norm Maciver (1983-86) and center Mike Peluso (1995-98) in that exclusive group.
Faulk ranks second among all NCAA rookie defensemen in scoring and is tied for first in total goals as well. In 32 games thus far, the South St. Paul, Minn., product has collected seven goals (six of which have come on the power play) and 17 assists for 24 points. (The last first-year UMD defenseman to turn in a higher scoring yield was Maciver with 27 points in 1982-83). Faulk sports the fourth best plus-minus rating (+17) of any 2010-11 Bulldog and has finished with a negative figure in only six games all season.
Brown, the Hockey Commissioner's Association National Rookie of the Month for October, resides in the No. 4 spot on the WCHA freshman scoring list with 32 points (14 goals and 18 assists) and is one of just six Bulldogs to accrue ice time in all 35 games to date -- the lone newcomer to do so. The Burnsville, Minn., native has picked up points in 10 of the last 12 outings, collecting nine goals and seven assists over that time.
In addition, a program-best 10 Bulldogs, including five previous honorees, earned WCHA All-Academic Team recognition for 2010-11. To qualify for this honor a student-athlete must have completed at least one year of residency at his present institution prior to the current academic year and have a grade point average of at least a 3.00 (on a 4.00 scale) for the previous two semesters/three quarters. A total of 140 players representing all 12 league institutions were named to this year's team.

Fontaine, Huttel, Reiter and Schmidt are all three-time WCHA All-Academic Team qualifiers while Connolly and Grun secured a spot on last year's team as well.
UMD also was represented by 10 players on both the 2008-09 and 1999-2000 WCHA All-Academic Teams -- the most ever.
