UMD AND MICHIGAN TECH END WEEKEND SERIES WITH A DRAW

Carson Soucy and Michigan Tech's Blake Hietala go after a loose puck during the second period Saturday at AMSOIL Arena.
Box Score For the second night in a row, goals were at a premium for both the University of Minnesota Duluth and Michigan Tech University, and Saturday night at AMSOIL Arena the two long-time rivals battled to a 1-1 overtime tie to close out their season-opening non-conference series.

The Bulldogs, who bested the Huskies 2-1 Friday, struck first 13:51 into the opening period when, with UMD on the power play, senior right winger Joe Basaraba corralled a rebound and stuffed the puck under the pads of Michigan Tech goalie Jamie Phillips. The goal was the 21st of the senior team captain's career and sixth against Michigan Tech in 14 lifetime outings.

Michigan Tech drew even with 6:07 to go in regulation on Mike Neville's goal which came off a scramble in front of the Bulldog net. The Huskies wound up outshooting UMD 26-22 on the night. They also held the Bulldogs scoreless on their fourth and final power play opportunity of the game, which came with just over two minutes remaining in overtime. UMD's penalty killing play was stellar for a second straight night, thwarting the Huskies on all five of their attempts (including a five-minute power play after UMD freshman center Dominic Toninato received a five-minute major and game disqualification for contact to the head midway through the second period. Michigan Tech went 0-for-11 during the two-game series with the man advantage.

"We shut them down on the power play all weekend and killing off that five-minute major was key," said UMD rookie left winger Kyle Osterberg. "But, we have to be able to generate momentum after that."

The Bulldogs will head to Colorado Springs, Colo., next Friday and Saturday for their first-ever National Collegiate Hockey Conference assignments with Colorado College.
