FOURTH RANKED BULLDOGS OVERPOWER HUSKIES

Elizabeth Benusa winds up to serve in the third set of the match versus St. Cloud State.
Box Score A few days after suffering their first home defeat of the 2013 campaign, the University of Minnesota Duluth responded in a convincing matter defeating Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference foe St. Cloud State in straight sets (25-20, 25-13, 25-13) to amass their 20th win of the year.

UMD, who owns an all-time series record of 64-33 over St. Cloud State, found themselves in a 15-15 tie midway through the first set but closed the set on a 10-5 run. After surviving the initial surge, the Bulldogs overwhelmed the Huskies in the final two games of the match with identical 25-13 scores.

"We got stronger as the match went on," said head coach Jim Boos. "I didn't like the start; too many errors, but we were able to overcome it. But after that, to have only three errors in the final 52 swings. It was a great bounce back victory."

Sophomore setter Ashley Hinsch delivered 34 assists and distributed the ball evenly to seven different players that hit .376 collectively on the night and a startling .882 in the third set.

Senior outside hitter Kate Lange paced the Bulldogs (20-2, 10-2 NSIC) with 15 of team's 45 kills. With her performance tonight, Lange now stands 26 kills behind Vicky Braegelmann for most career kills by a Bulldog. Freshman Sydnie Mauch was right behind Lange with 11 kills on 16 swings. Lange and Mauch also chipped in at the net defensively, recording three blocks each.

The Bulldogs held the Huskies (12-8, 6-6 NSIC) to 25 kills on a .042 hitting clip. Juniors Julie Rainey and Katie Ledwell led the defense in digs with 15 and nine, respectively.

The three-game roadstand will continue for UMD with an engagement against No.17 Wayne State College on Friday. First serve is set for 7:00 p.m.
