FIVE BULLDOGS NOTCH DOUBLE DIGITS IN SEASON OPENING WIN

Danielle Flood was one of five Bulldogs in double figures against Missouri S&T.
Box Score The University of Minnesota Duluth opened its 2013-14 season with a 13-point road victory on Friday afternoon with the Bulldogs knocking off the host Miners 83-70 at the Missouri S&T Tournament.

UMD (1-0) saw five Bulldogs notch double-digit points, led by senior center Hannah Rutten's double-double (16 points, 12 rebounds). Rutten added a block and a pair of steals in 34 minutes of action. S&T (1-1) opened a five-point lead six minutes into the first half, but the Bulldogs came back to tie on a Danielle Flood (Jr./G) three-pointer and did not look back, opening up a ten-point lead before the end of the half.

The Miners battled back into it halfway through the second half, but UMD kept its composure, re-opening its lead to the 13-point final after a tie with 9:02 remaining.

Senior forward Katrina Newman also netted 16 points for the Bulldogs with three steals and a team-high four assists. Junior forward Jessica Newman was four-for-seven from beyond the arch with 14 points. Flood finished four-of-six from the floor with 10 points while junior guard Alyssa Kerkhoff added 10 of her own.

UMD will look to build on its momentum with another game tomorow morning at 10:30 a.m. in Rolla. The Bulldogs take on Pittsburg State, who began the season with a win over Henderson State on Thursday night.
