Through the opening month of the 2013-14 season, the University of Minnesota Duluth established itself as one of the best teams in the nation at preventing goals -- but not necessarily at producing them.
Saturday night in Grand Forks, however, the Bulldogs cranked up the offense -- to the tune of a season-high six goals -- and were rewarded with a 6-3 triumph and a split of their two-game National Collegiate Hockey Conference series with the University of North Dakota. Junior right winger
Adam Krause, who came into the weekend with three goals to his collegiate credit, scored twice while sophomore left winger
Austin Farley (one goal and one assist for two points), rookie left winger
Alex Iafallo (1-1=2), senior right winger
Joe Basaraba (1-1=2), sophomore center
Tony Cameranesi (0-3=3) and freshman defenseman
Willie Raskob (0-3=3) all turned in multi-point nights for No. 20 UMD, which carried a 3-1 lead into the first intermission and never looked back.
Krause also tallied in the Bulldogs' 4-2 setback to No. 13 North Dakota on Friday while
Alex Iafallo racked up two goal and two assists on the weekend. UMD outshot its long-time rivals for the second night in a row (32-25) and went 2-fo-6 on the power play. North Dakota, which hadn't surrendered more than six goals to the Bulldogs since being blanked 7-0 on Feb. 28, 1998 in Duluth, converted one of its four chances with the man advantage.
The Bulldogs, 5-4-1 overall and even 2-2-0 in the NCHC, will remain on the road for another weekend to face top-ranked Unversity of Minnesota next weekend.
Notes: Alex Iaffalo, UMD's top point producer thus far with five goals and five assists in 10 outings, will carry a five-game scoring streak into the non-conference series at Minnesota ... Senior goaltender
Aaron Crandall finished with 22 stops en route to posting his first ever win over North Dakota (1-3-1 in five lifetime appearances). Crandall is 4-3-0 on the year and has made seven consecutive starts ... The Bulldogs are now 32-0-4 when they've scored at least four times going back to October 2011.
