The University of Minnesota Duluth put itself in a 3-0 hole early in the second period and that deficit proved to be a bit too large to overcome Saturday night in a 4-2 road loss to Ohio State University.
The Bulldogs, who came into the night sporting the nation's second lowest goals against average (1.57), trailed 2-0 at the first intermission break before falling behind by three goals 64 seconds into the second period. UMD, a 3-1 winner over the Buckeyes Friday, answered a little over a minute later on goal from rookie left winger
Alex Iafallo (his third of the season) and then cut the Ohio State lead to 3-2 at 16:38 of that same period when junior center
Caleb Herbert sailed a shot from near the left faceoff dot over the blocker of Buckeye goaltender Matt Tomkins. Ryan Dzinger's empty netter with 33 seconds to go in regulation sealed the victory and made Ohio State the first team to score more than three goals on UMD this season.
The Bulldogs outshot the Buckeyes 41-29 (27-14 from the second period on) and also held them scoreless on all six of their power play chances after turning in a perfect 5-for-5 penalty killing effort in the series opener.
Senior goaltender Alex Crandall finished with 25 saves for the Bulldogs, who dropped to 4-3-1 overall. Ohio State is now an even 4-4-0.
UMD is off next weekend and will return to the ice on Nov. 16-17 for a two-game National Collegiate Hockey Association set at the University of North Dakota.
