CAMERANESI AND WELINSKI CHOSEN TO WCHA ALL-ROOKIE TEAM

The Western Collegiate Hockey Association unveiled its 2012-13 honor teams Thursday and the University of Minnesota Duluth's talented rookie class was certainly well-represented.

Center Tony Cameranesi and defenseman Andy Welinski both made the six-member WCHA All-Rookie Team (no other school had more than one representative), marking the second time two Bulldogs have received that citation in the same season.  Blueliner Justin Faulk and winger J.T. Brown (2010-11) and defenseman Curtis Doell and goaltender Brant Nicklin (1996-97) were the others.

Cameranesi and Welinski helped make UMD's rookie class the fourth highest-scoring unit in the nation during the regular season. Cameranesi is tied for second nationally in freshman scoring with 34 points, power-play goals (seven) and powr play points (17). Welinski, who like Cameranesi has skated in all 36 games this winter, currently ranks second among WCHA first-year blueliners in points, having  amassed four goals and 13 assists. That's the second largest scoring harvest by a Bulldog rookie pointman since the 1998-99 season.

In addition, nine Bulldogs, including four previous honorees, earned WCHA All-Academic Team recognition for 2012-13. To qualify for this honor a student-athlete must have completed at least one year of residency at his present institution prior to the current academic year and have a grade point average of at least a 3.00 (on a 4.00 scale) for the previous two semesters/three quarters. A total of 164 players representing all 12 league institutions were named to this year's team.

The nine Bulldogs include sophomore defenseman Chris Casto, sophomore goalie Aaron Crandall, sophomore winger Justin Crandall, senior captain Keegan Flaherty, senior center Jake Hendrickson, sophomore center Caleb Herbert, sophomore winger Adam Krause, sophomore defenseman LukeMcManus and junior defenseman Tim Smith

Aaron Crandall (three times), Flaherty (three times)Hendrickson (twice) and McManus (twice) are each repeat selections.
