Carson Soucy, who will enlist his blueline services with the University of Minnesota Duluth this fall, became the the first Bulldog to ever get drafted by the Minnesota Wild Sunday when that franchise selected him in the fifth round of the National Hockey League Draft.
Soucy, a 6-4, 195-pound native of Irma, Alberta, was the137th pick overall. He spent the previous one-plus seasons with the Spruce Grove Saints of the Alberta Junior Hockey League and played a key role in their conquest of both the 2013 AJHL North Division regular season and playoff titles. Despite missing a healthy portion of the team's 2012-13 schedule while nursing a knee injury and also representing Canada at the 2012 International Softball Federation World Junior Championship (outfielder), Soucy still managed 15 points on five goals and 10 assists in 35 regular season outings. In 2011-12, he went pointless over the course of a seven-game spell in Spruce Grove after maintaining a near point-per-game scoring average as a Lloydminster Bobcat (Midget AAA ) that same season.
In addition to Soucy, the 2013-14 UMD roster will include six other NHL draftees -- senior right winger and team captain Joe Basaraba (Florida Panthers), sophomore center Tony Cameranesi (Toronto Maple Leafs), junior left winger Caleb Herbert (Washington Capitals), senior center Max Tardy (St. Louis Blues), freshman center Dominic Toninato (Toronto Maple Leafs) and sophomore defenseman Andy Welinski (Anaheim Ducks).
Since Murray Keogan was scooped up by the St. Louis Blues in the second round back in 1970, 101 Bulldogs have now heard their names called in the NHL Draft.
